North American Birding Trails
Since their beginning in 1996, birding trails now breeze throughout the United States. Texas was the earliest of now almost 40 states to generate birding trails. These paths were the motivation of Ted Eubanks and Madge Lindsay. Their encouragement resulted in the first trail, the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. The list continues to cultivate as birders and additional nature lovers notice this great way to enjoy our wildlife resources.
The trails are formed using existing highways, byways and county roads to tie prime public and private birding areas. Distinguishing signs mark the way and detailed maps are on hand for each of the trails. Some of these trails are 
free and some have a small charge. Both can be a huge help to bird seeking people who are unfamiliar with an area.
Professional birders and novice birders alike are drawn to these wonderful trails. An improvement to local economies and a benefit to birds – birding trails are a win-win condition for all involved. Not only do birders spend cash while traveling along birding trails, the trails also assist communities become aware of the treasures they may have in their own back yard – and the need to guard those treasures.
The National Audubon Society and the American Birding Association both have wide-ranging lists of birding trails on their web sites. Arrange a birding road-trip to a place you haven’t been in a while or explore someplace totally new to you.
